Just the thought of a sauna is relaxing. An infrared sauna, with its penetrating heat (as opposed to a conventional sauna), only makes the experience more satisfying. And guess what? You can buy and install your own infrared sauna from a kit.

Difficulty: Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Infrared sauna kit (many types and sizes to choose from)
  1. Step 1

Purchase the model of infrared sauna kit you have chosen.

  2. Step 2

Unpack the sauna kit. Take some time to read over the installation instructions. Assemble any tools that may be necessary (some kits do not require tools for assembly).

  3. Step 3

Determine if any site preparation will be necessary, and perform any needed work. (This is explained more fully in the Tips section.)

  4. Step 4

Locate the bottom panel of the sauna, and place it on the surface the sauna will be sitting on (such as the ground, deck or floor). Make sure the front part is facing where the front will be, and the back is facing where the back will be. All panels should be clearly marked.

  5. Step 5

Fit the front panel into the grooves, notches or indentions in the bottom panel. At this time, someone else must continue to hold the front panel upright, so don't try to do this alone.

  6. Step 6

Connect the left panel (note: this means YOUR left, when facing the FRONT of the sauna) to the front panel by sliding the side brackets into the front brackets, using the fastening equipment supplied with the kit. This may include fasteners, buckles or other items. Do the same for the right panel.

  7. Step 7

Connect the back panel to the sides of the left and right panels and to the bottom panel and fasten it down, following the kit instructions.

  8. Step 8

Install the bench heater in its designated spot, according to the kit instructions. Make sure the top of the heater is at the top, and the bottom is at the bottom.

  9. Step 9

Plug in the bench heater, making sure all plugs are in the right outlets.

  10. Step 10

Install the bench panel. Make sure the sitting surface (it will be smooth and have some sort of finish) is facing upward.

  11. Step 11

Install the top panel LAST. Lower it onto the other panels, and fasten it according to the kit instructions.

Tips & Warnings
  • Decide on how your want your sauna to look. Some of the smaller, more “square-shaped” ones unfortunately resemble old-fashioned outhouses. Hexagonal structures may offer a more aesthetic appeal.
  • Most infrared saunas are intended to be used outside. While they can be installed on an existing deck, porch or concrete slab, or even enclosed in an existing shed or similar building, some site preparation may be needed if the sauna is to be installed on the grass or ground.
  • Make sure any cables, wires or other operating parts do not get wedged between the panels during installation.
  • Do not allow yourself to become overheated. While infrared sauna temperatures are more easily controlled, it is still possible to get too hot. Serious physical problems can occur from overheating. Likewise, do not cool down too rapidly. This could also cause physical problems.
  • Don't forget to check with your doctor before using any type of sauna, if you have physical conditions that may preclude you using a sauna.
