In a world where modern plumbing is sometimes still a luxury, squat toilets can be found throughout the world, especially in developing countries. Squat toilets can provide a bit of a challenge for Westerners, however, and without proper understanding, can prompt some foul experiences.

Familiarize yourself with the toilet. Squat toilets differ the world over, from Japan to Turkey.

Pull your pants down around your ankles, but don`t drop them so far such that they make contact with the toilet. Hold your pants forward and away from the toiler, roll up your pant legs, or tuck them into your socks. Alternatively, remove your pants, and hang them close by.

Squat over the bowl, placing your feet on the (hopefully) textured grids on both sides of the toilet's hole. Keep your feet flat. On your toes, you may very well fall over. Stick your buttocks far behind you over the hole. Stabilize yourself.

Do your business, aiming for the toilet's hole. To urinate, direct your urine back, in-between your legs. Shuffle to one side or the other to hone your aim.

If water and a bucket is provided, wash yourself. Wipe yourself with toilet paper (if provided), using your free hand. Many squat toilets can't handle toilet paper. in this case, drop the paper in the appropriate trash bin.

If water and bucket are provided, pour the water down in the toilet to flush.
