How to Become a Better Waitress

Waiting tables is one of the most difficult jobs that you can have. If you think that becoming a waitress is something that you would like to do then read on. If the customers like you, and you keep the boss happy, you can make pretty good money off of tips. Here are some steps you can take to becoming an excellent waitress. This will not only bring tipping customers back to your restaurant, it will loosen the strings on their coin purses before they leave.

Instructions

  1. Smile

    • 1

Smile. People like happy people and smiles are contagious. Customers who are paying for their food would prefer to have somebody who is smiling and in a good mood.

    • 2

Refill cups before they become empty. Coffee and water can be hard to keep up on. If you grab the coffee pot or the water pitcher and make rounds with them every 10 minutes or so keeping cups full isn’t as hard as it seems. Customers do not like to ask to have their cups refilled.

    • 3

Be friendly. Always speak to people with a friendly tone in your voice. Not only will they be more likely to be polite in return, but they also enjoy talking to somebody with a happy demeanor.

    • 4

Move quickly. People like their food hot. The quicker you get it out to them, the warmer it will be when they bite into it.

    • 5

Learn the menus. Some people aren’t sure what they want to eat when they come in. You can be helpful to them by suggesting things that they might enjoy.

    • 6

Take orders accurately. Some people have allergies to certain foods. Overlooking something that they may have specifically requested or asked to be eliminated can be very hazardous to the customer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to bring people their check soon after they get their food. This will save the customer the trouble of asking or waiting around for their check. Wear good shoes. Shoes are very important when working in a restaurant. You are always on your feet and moving. Making your feet as comfortable as you can is very important.

  • Never argue with a customer. If the customer has a problem that you cannot resolve nicely, discuss it with your manager. Arguing with the customers will only make them more upset and worsen the situation.
