Step 1
Be professional. Having a professional approach to your work is the first step toward achieving success. Developing and maintaining a professional attitude will give you the "edge" you need to move beyond surviving to thriving at work.
-
Step 2
Project a positive image. Put yourself forward in the best possible light to everyone you come in contact with (bosses, co-workers, direct reports, clients and customers). Learn to present yourself in a capable, experienced and competent manner with a positive image.
-
Step 3
Inspire confidence. There is only one "you", but hundreds of others who are watching every move you make at work. Therefore, you must do your best even when you think no one is looking. Your goal is to initiate trust and stir up support by displaying poise and demonstrating how well you perform your tasks and responsibilities. In this way you will inspire confidence.
-
Step 4
Get your act together. Do you have a personal vision? If the answer to this question is "no", then spend some quality time thinking about your life's purpose or personal vision as well as your dreams, goals and aspirations. If your answer is "yes", then act out your personal vision daily as you work.
-
Step 5
Treat people with dignity and respect. There is no acceptable excuse for rudeness and hostility when dealing with others. You must treat everyone you meet with dignity and respect regardless of their status in the office. Resist the urge to put down others to make yourself look great.
-
Step 6
Create a perception of value. Develop and promote a reputation for excellence that addresses the needs of your leaders, colleagues and clients. Find new and different ways to surpass their expectations and requirements. It doesn't matter what kind of job you have. Ultimately, you want to make yourself more valuable to anyone you work for.
