How to Buy a Live Skunk

1
Begin your search locally. The closer to home you find your pet skunk, the less stressful the transition will be for both of you. Search the Exotic Pets classifieds in your local newspapers. Check with local pet shops. Even if they don't have a skunk for sale, they might know of a nearby reputable breeder.

2
Consider adopting from a skunk rescue organization. Domestic skunks are often surrendered as ill-prepared owners realize that they have chosen the wrong pet for their personality and lifestyle. In states where pet skunks are legal, there is usually a rescue organization that steps in. These organizations are often willing to release rescued skunks to good homes. There is usually a fee for this. See resources at the bottom of the page.

3
Join skunk email groups, chats and clubs. This can be a great place to network with skunk-savvy people and find out about available skunks or upcoming litters. See resources at the bottom of the page.

4
Locate a nearby skunk breeder. It is best if you can go in person to visit the breeder and make sure that your skunk is coming from a clean, humane and happy home. Ask to see the breeder's license and inspection reports. If it is impossible to travel to the breeder, you may be able to make arrangements to have the skunk shipped to you. However, this is difficult for the skunk and should be a last resort.

Tips & Warnings
Be patient. Skunks have their annual litters in the spring. Litter size can run from 3 to 9 kits. Kits are usually ready to adopt in June or July. You might need to wait a while for an available skunk, especially if you want a very young one.
Do your homework. Reputable breeders and skunk rescue specialists will most likely ask you specific questions about how you plan to care for your pet skunk, where it will sleep, what it will eat and what kind of lifestyle it will enjoy. Your answers to these questions should reflect at least a basic knowledge of a domestic skunk's needs.
Keep a paper trail on your skunk. When you buy or adopt your skunk, keep your receipt to prove your pet is domesticated. Get permit numbers from the breeder or rescuer.
