Mineral makeup is popular for many reasons. It is better for your skin than traditional makeup, has natural sunscreen and can be easily blended for your own custom shade. If you like to play with mineral makeup, you can take the custom look a step further and mix your own mineral makeup.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 1/3 tsp of titanium dioxide
  • 1/3 tsp of boron nitride
  • 1/3 tsp of zinc oxide
  • 3 tbps of white mica
  • yellow, red 150, blue and brown oxides
  • Mortar and pestle
  • Jar with a sifter lid
  • Jojoba oil, kaolin clay, vitamin E, bismuth oxychloride (optional)

    Making Your Own Mineral Makeup

  1. Step 1

Mix the titanium dioxide, boron nitride, zinc oxide and white mica, using the pestle to thoroughly blend all the ingredients.

  2. Step 2

Add 1/16 tsp of each oxide, mixing thoroughly after the addition of each color. This will produce a matte ivory foundation. To make yellow-toned foundation, add a few grains of yellow oxide to the ivory foundation. Blend well after each addition until you have reached the desired shade.

  3. Step 3

Continue adding a few grains of oxides, blending after each addition. Adding red 150 and blue oxides will result in a cool foundation. Brown and yellow oxides will result in a buff or honey foundation.

  4. Step 4

Add 2-3 drops of jojoba oil if desired. Other popular additives are kaolin clay for oil absorption, vitamin E oil and bismuth oxychloride for added shimmer.

  5. Step 5

Transfer your foundation to a sifter jar and store in a dry place. If you have added any oils, the shelf life of your foundation is about six months. Without the addition of oils, your foundation will be good indefinitely. It is non-organic, which means that it will not support bacterial of fungal growth.
