Step 1
Be sure to have a proper habitat for your crab before making your purchase. Make sure that you have a container or aquarium that is deep enough that the crab can bury inself completely in sand. Provide sand similiar to what the crabs would find in nature. This typically consists of a sand/soil mixture.
-
Step 2
Provide your crab with both fresh water and salt water. Each bowl of water needs to be large enough for the crab to climb into.
-
Step 3
Have commercial hermit crab food available before purchasing your crab. This food needs to be available in the cage at all times.
-
Step 4
Before bringing your crab home, be sure that the temperature in its habitat is controlled at 78 degrees and that a high humidity can be maintained.
-
Step 5
Place extra shells in the habitat before adding the hermit crabs. In nature, hermit crabs are always looking for a better shell. Having extra shells of different sizes will allow your hermit crab to chose which shell is right for him.
-
Step 6
Give your hermit crab plenty of places to hide and climb. This will help to minimize the stress that many captive hermit crabs experience.
