Things You'll Need:
- Wood block
- Pecans
- Hazelnuts
- Walnuts
- Knife
- Paint
- Glue
- Feather
- Pin
- 2 Toothpicks
-
Step 1
Place a block of wood (about 2 inches wide, 4 inches long, and a quarter-inch thick) in front of you. This is your nut totem pole's base. Using a knife, slowly saw a large nut shell in half. Use glue to attach half of the nutshell to the wood base, round side up.
-
Step 2
While the the glue is drying, line up five other nuts in order of size, largest to smallest. I'd recommend using a variety of nuts--walnuts, hazelnuts, and pecans all work well. Paint a face onto each nut.
-
Step 3
Use glue to attach the largest of the nuts onto the half nutshell. Wait until the glue has fully dried, then glue the second-largest nut on top of the first. Again, wait patiently for the glue to dry before proceeding to the third-largest. Continue until all five nuts are glued in a straight, stacked position, one on top of the other.
-
Step 4
Use a tiny drop of glue to attach a small feather to the back of the top nut, standing straight up.
-
Step 5
To make a beaver next to the totem pole, paint a face onto the broad part of a hazelnut (the beaver's head), then glue it to the end of a pecan (the beaver's body). Use a pin to poke four small holes into the bottom of the pecan, from where the legs would regularly protrude. Snap two toothpicks in half, then insert the broken sides into the four holes to create beaver legs. Now glue the end of the beaver's legs to the wood base.
