How to Setup a Garmin Navigator

Garmin navigators are wonderful devices for travel. Setting one up requires just a few moments of work, but doing it correctly will save you time before setting out on a trip.

Instructions

    • 1

Charge your Garmin completely before attempting setup.

    • 2

Take your Garmin outside. You do not have to be in your vehicle, but you can install it on the windshield first if you desire.

    • 3

Check to be sure that you are at least 50 feet away from any buildings or trees that obscure your view of the sky.

    • 4

      Turn on the Garmin navigator.

    • 5

Wait at least 5 minutes while it locates satellites.

    • 6

Check the map to be sure the Garmin has determined your position correctly.

    • 7

Test the Garmin's settings by having it find directions to a location near you which you know well. Make sure its suggested route is correct.

    • 8

Turn it off if it gives you accurate information. If it is wrong, select "Reset Settings" from the main menu and start over.

Tips & Warnings

  • Wait for a clear day before setting up your Garmin if you can.

  • Do not try to start your Garmin indoors as this will interfere with satellite reception.
