How to Remove a Tub-and-Shower Valve

Removing a tub-and-shower valve is necessary when you need to replace the valve completely, or when you want to update your bath and shower faucet. Once you locate the tub-and-shower valve, removing it is very easy. After removing the valve, you will have to replace it with a new one so you can continue to use the bathtub and shower.

    How to Remove a Tub-and-Shower Valve

  1. Step 1

    Shut off the hot and cold water beforehand, to prevent water leakage later on. Using a screwdriver, take off the valve cap located on the faucet. Loosen the handle screw located underneath the valve cap so that you can remove it.

  2. Step 2

    Once you've removed the handle screw, look for the setscrew. By removing the setscrew, you will be able to take off the lever handle. You may need to use a screwdriver to remove the setscrew.

  3. Step 3

    Remove the cover plate to expose the tub-and-shower valve.

  4. Step 4

    If there are hoses attached to the tub-and-shower valve, remove them before pulling out the valve. There many be water trapped inside the hoses, so be prepared for possible leakage.

  5. Step 5

    Carefully remove the tub-and-shower valve from the rest of the plumbing. Clean or replace the valve as necessary.
