Instructions

    • 1

Find an online directory of junkyards or use your phone book to find junkyards near you. If you do not find any junkyards near you try broadening your search to include a wider area. Some area's zoning laws may not allow for the operation of junkyards and you will have to travel a bit further to get to the nearest junkyard.

    • 2

Once you have located a junkyard, contact them through email or by phone about the vehicle your are looking for. Be sure to specify the details of the vehicle such as year, fuel type, engine and two wheel drive or four wheel drive. If you are looking for parts for a vehicle you already own, having your VIN number available for reference is also helpful.

    • 3

Find out if the junkyard is networked with other junkyards. If they are, ask if they can locate the vehicle you are looking for in their network of junkyards. They way also be able to provide you with an idea of what the vehicle or part may cost from the other facility.

    • 4

Before visiting the junkyard that has the part or vehicle you need, find out what type of facility it is. Some junkyards allow you to bring tools and remove parts yourself. Other junkyards sell parts, just like a parts store would, and do not allow or require you to dismantle vehicles yourself. Also find out if the junkyard you are going to visit sells whole cars, some junkyards do and others do not, they are merely parts sources.

If the junkyard you visit is one where you will be bringing your own tools and removing parts yourself, ask the office personnel where the vehicle is located inside the junkyard. They will be able to point out the location of the particular make and model vehicle you are looking for.

Tips & Warnings

  • Junkyards that allow you to remove parts yourself often have tools available for heavy jobs such as pulling engines. These can usually be rented for a nominal fee.
