How to Treat Decreased Appetite
Step1
See a doctor if your decreased appetite has resulted in a loss of weight. You may have an illness that you’re not aware of that is responsible for your lack of appetite. Doctors can perform tests and offer treatments to any underlying illness you may have.
Step2
Buy some nutritional drinks to help your body maintain its weight and meet its daily caloric needs. Even if you don’t feel like eating, you can drink a supplement drink such as Ensure or Boost to provide energy and calories to your body. These drinks should not replace meals altogether without first consulting your doctor. Drink them in between meals or substitute the drink for one of your meals.
Step3
Write down what you’re eating in a food diary. This will help you to keep track of your caloric intake and see if you’re eating enough to stay healthy.
Step4
Identify any feelings or situations that are contributing to your decreased appetite. Illnesses such as depression, anorexia, hypothyroidism, colds, and other illnesses or infections can result in a decreased appetite.
Step5
Buy foods and snacks that you enjoy eating. Having your favorite foods can help to stimulate your appetite. Always make yourself eat something, even if you have to eat smaller portions several times a day. Be sure to take a multivitamin to ensure that your body is getting the vitamins and minerals it needs.
