Are you tired of buying flatware that is practically disposable? Wouldn't you love to have a set of silverware that would last for 20 years or more? Looking at all the different brands and styles can be intimidating. Which one should you choose? Your choice will seem easier if you follow these steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Remember that weight equals quality. Have you ever noticed how light a box of inexpensive flatware is? Even when they include a free tray, you can easily lift the entire box with one hand. This is a sign of poor quality. A nice set of silverware should be quite heavy. Even when you handle individual pieces, you should be able to notice that the pieces are heavier than less expensive brands.

  2. Step 2

Look for pieces that are solid. High quality silverware should be solid. The spoons should be thick enough to scoop hard ice cream without bending. Remember, you're not just using this silverware for holiday dinners, it needs to stand up to everyday use.

  3. Step 3

Avoid silverware made from more than one piece. Flatware that is made from several pieces always falls apart after only a couple years of use. High quality silverware is made from one solid piece.

  4. Step 4

Buy stainless steel. If you want high quality silverware that will last, buy stainless steel. The best set that you could choose would be solid 18/10 stainless steel. This ensures that the product lasts. When you buy a set that has a stainless steel coating, the coating will fall off.

  5. Step 5

Find a style that will last. You may find a style that seems trendy, or fits your current decor, but it's best to choose a style that you can see using 20 years from now. A high quality set of silverware will be in your kitchen for at least two decades. Make sure it's something you'll love several years from now.

Tips & Warnings
  • It's not uncommon for a high quality set of silverware to weigh more than 8 pounds.
  • When buying high quality silverware, make sure it comes with a warranty.
