If you are looking for romance, you might decide to join the many people who look on an on-line dating site for a new partner. Not long ago, seeking a date meant placing a personal classified listing in the local newspaper. Now anyone interested in finding that special someone can turn to the Internet. There are ways to present yourself that will better your chances of meeting that special someone. Your on-line dating profile should give a clear image of the kind of person you are, and the kind of person you seek.

How to Create an On-line Dating Profile

  1. Step 1

Fill out basic information for the profile first. Basic information includes your age, gender, height, weight, and hair color. There is no need to fill out all of it if you feel uncomfortable doing so. If the dating site you have joined requires too much personal information, find another dating site. It is a good idea to use a pseudonym on dating sites.

  2. Step 2

Summarize your basic interests, but also add specifics to make you stand out. Many people in the world say that they are fun-loving types who like to go for walks in parks, and they don't say much more. Assuming your purpose for creating an on-line dating profile is to find a suitable mate, you should describe, specifically, some of your unique likes or dislikes. If, for instance, one of your favorite things to do is to do yoga in a vat of pudding, say so. No matter how unusual your interests, there may be someone out there who shares them. You should avoid vague statements whenever possible. If you like to read crime fiction, don't just write that you like to read.

  3. Step 3

State precisely the type of person you are looking for. This may mean expressing the kinds of activities that you really dislike; for instance, if you really don't want a recreational drug user, specify that. If you will only consider someone who has attended college, or someone who has hair, state that.

  4. Step 4

Describe yourself in the best light side but make it realistic. Doing this will save you, and others, from disappointment later and from wasted time. Point out your best attributes without hiding all your flaws.

  5. Step 5

Upload a photo to your profile. It is not necessary and you may not want to add a photo if you feel uncomfortable doing so. If you do add a photo to your profile, keep in mind that it is always possible that someone you know may come across your profile and recognize you.

Tips & Warnings
  • Never put your address in an on-line dating profile. Unfortunately, there are a lot of unstable individuals in the world. It is better to be extra cautious and stay safe--this is true for both men and women.
  • Tread cautiously when giving information to people you've met on-line--even if you have been chatting for a while.
  • Remember that the Internet is not private. Even if the dating site you join is a member's only website, there is always the chance someone you know, perhaps even an employer, will discover your profile. A pseudonym is appropriate but will not work well if your photo is on your profile and someone you know stumbles upon it.
