Due to the vast popularity of the internet, higher education is undergoing a transformation. Whereas a traditional education once meant physically going to a school, today students can simply turn on their computers and take courses online. Online courses are becoming increasingly popular because of the ease and the convenience they offer students. If you opt to take an online course, however, there are a few tips of which you should be aware.

How to Choose an Online Course

Step1
Decide if an online course is right for you. Taking an online course is far different than taking a course in a traditional educational setting, such as a college campus. While you will have interaction with your instructor and fellow classmates, generally through a message board, you won't get to see them face-to-face. In addition, you won't have an instructor standing over you, reminding you that an assignment is due or that you have an upcoming exam. To excel in an online course, you must be self-disciplined and be able to work independently.
Step2
Determine what type of online course you want to take. Do you want to take a course for college or graduate credit? Or, do you just want to take a course to enhance your knowledge about a particular subject?
Step3
Consider your options. You have a plethora of options when it comes to taking an online course. Online courses are offered through community colleges, four-year colleges and universities. There are also many organizations that offer online courses.
Step4
Talk with the instructor of the courses you are considering to determine whether or not you share a similar educational philosophy. For example, if you want to take a short story class, find out how the instructor operates. Does he have his students write an entire short story then revise it? Or, does he require his students to write a few pages and revise until those pages are perfect then they can move on to write new material? Knowing your instructor's philosophy will help you determine if a particular online class is right for you.
Step5
Ensure that your computer and Internet connection meet the school's technical requirements.
Step6
Inquire about the refund policy before you sign up for an online course. Even after talking to the instructor, you may find that the class isn't what you expected or you simply don't have the time to complete the assignments and need to drop the class. Find out the refund policy first, so you don't run into any surprises after you sign up.
Step7
Ask about technical support. What happens if you can't log into your virtual classroom or you have another technical problem? Is technical support available to help you? If so, how do you contact technical support and during what hours is support available?
Step8
Once you're confident you have found an online class that meets your needs and interests, you're ready to sign up.
