If you live in an area that's prone to hurricanes and other violent storms, installing storm shutters can help protect your home from damage. Storm shutters can protect both windows and doors as well as valuables you have inside the home. Storm shutters may also lower your home insurance costs in some areas.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Storm shutter installation kit
  • Drill
  • Level
  1. Step 1

Measure windows and doors before ordering storm shutters and panels. Most kits include precut pieces that are easy to mount and install.

  2. Step 2

Check to make sure all of the pieces you need to install your shutters are included before you begin. Locate the H-header and the F-track. Using your drill, find the starter holes and drill through them. Place the H-header above the window. Use the level to make sure it's straight before attaching it.

  3. Step 3

Attach the F-track to the bottom of the window. Use a level to make sure the F-track has been properly placed before attaching it.

  4. Step 4

Place mounting screws into the slot that's located on the F-track. Take the first panel and place it underneath the hood of the H-header. Use the wing nuts provided to secure the panel in place. Continue mounting the rest of the panels until you've created an accordion storm shutter. Panels should overlap for added protection.

  5. Step 5

Make sure the wing nuts are tightened properly so they do not loosen during a storm. Continue installing storm shutters until the last window is secure.

Tips & Warnings
  • You can remove the panels after the storm season has ended. Keep the H-header and F-track in place so you can easily reinstall the panels before a storm approaches.
