Pierce Your Own Ears with a Kit

Ever wanted to get your ears pierced? It's not always necessary to have it done at a store. You can pierce your ears anywhere with a home ear-piercing kit. Here's some easy-to-follow advice to get you going in no time.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Ear-piercing kit that includes:
  • Ear-piercing gun
  • Earrings made for ear-piercing gun
  • Marker for ears
  • Alcohol/cleaning wipes
  • Bottle of ear-cleaning solution (for afterward)
  • Bottle of hydrogen peroxide (optional)
  • Cotton swabs
  1. Step 1

Open one of the earring containers (it should come in a small cartridge for loading into the earring gun) and load it into your ear-piercing gun. The instructions should demonstrate this, but normally the earring itself will be closest to the trigger and the back of the earring will be at the far end.

  2. Step 2

Take an alcohol wipe and cleanse both sides of the ear to be pierced. Use the marker and make a dot on each ear where you want the earrings to go. Have someone check that they are even, or take a photo if you are checking yourself.

  3. Step 3

Once you are satisfied with the location of the dots, take the gun and position it so that the back of the earring is behind your ear, and the earring is facing your earlobe with the pointed side aimed at it. Make sure the gun is straight and hold it steady.

  4. Step 4

Slowly push the trigger until the point of the earring is touching your ear. Do not squeeze it yet! Check in the mirror to make sure everything is lined up with the dot. Make sure the gun is straight, not facing down, up or at an angle.

  5. Step 5

Take a deep breath and firmly press in the trigger. Continue pushing until the earring is through your ear, and has connected with the earring backing. This may sting slightly, but it should go quickly, so don't worry about getting halfway through and changing your mind. The earring will probably already be through before you realize it.

  6. Step 6

Release the button and lower the gun straight down. Make sure the earring went through correctly. If the earring went through, but the back did not connect, simply use a small object to pry the back out of the cartridge and attach it. Make sure the back is not too tight against your earlobe. You ear needs room to breathe to prevent infection. When you're ready, repeat this process with the other ear.

  7. Step 7

Care for your newly pierced ears. Clean your ears as least twice a day with a cotton swab dipped in ear-cleaning solution or hydrogen peroxide. Do NOT remove the earrings for at least six weeks. Turn the earrings around in a full circle two to three times a day. This keeps the earlobe from growing onto the earring.

Tips & Warnings
  • You must be 18 to purchase an ear-piercing kit.
  • Use real earrings instead of cheap ones to prevent an allergic reaction.
  • Don't skip cleaning your ear before piercing or you may get an infection.
