The macrobiotic diet is one of the most restrictive diets around. There is an extensive list of forbidden foods which, to newcomers, seems somewhat arbitrary. In addition, many of the staple foods in the macrobiotic diet can only be found in specialty stores. Therefore, planning meals ahead of time and keeping a list of forbidden foods on-hand is essential.

From Quick Guide: Macrobiotic Diet Basics
Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Don't buy premade food. Even "natural" prepackaged meals are likely to contain preservatives, sweeteners, and spices forbidden by the macrobiotic diet.

  2. Step 2

Cook meals ahead of time. As macrobiotic diets forbid processed food, the best way to adhere to your diet is to make sure to have something prepared you can eat.

  3. Step 3

Keep a list of foods to avoid with you at all times. It can be difficult to keep track of all the forbidden foods - particularly the vegetables - and having a list with you can make things easier.

  4. Step 4

Double-check any food that is very sweet to make sure it is allowed. Since tropical fruits and most sweeteners are forbidden, and most fruits are only meant to be eaten a few times a week, sweetness is usually a clue that something is potentially forbidden.

  5. Step 5

Stay away from animal products. Dairy products, meat, and eggs are all forbidden by the macrobiotic diet.

  6. Step 6

Buy a good selection of oils allowed by the macrobiotic diet. Because animal fat and most vegetable oils are forbidden, be sure to have a selection of unrefined, natural vegetable oils on-hand.

  7. Step 7

Use a lot of fermented soy products. Most strong spices are forbidden by the macrobiotic diet, so soy is one of the best ways to create tasty, flavorful meals.

  8. Step 8

Watch what you drink. Caffeinated beverages, alcohol, and even most herbal teas are forbidden by the macrobiotic diet.
