How to Use Herbal Oils to Condition Hair

  1. Step 1

Work the oil from the roots of your hair to the tips. These oils often help moisturize the scalp, so it is important that the oil does not simply sit on the top layer of your hair. Start at the hairline at your forehead and temples and run your fingers slowly through your hair while massaging your scalp. This will saturate your hair with the herbal oil.

  2. Step 2

Lock in the moisture and herbal benefits with a tight turban.Wrapping your hair after saturating it with an herbal oil prevents your hair from drying out and any of the essential oils from becoming crusty or making your head itch.

  3. Step 3

Leave the herbal oil on your hair for at least 30 minutes. Herbal conditioning oils work best over time. You should allow at least half an hour for the oils to work on repairing and rejuvenating your hair. If you immediately rinse them out, you will see little to no change in your hair's appearance.

  4. Step 4

Rinse your hair with cool or lukewarm water. Many natural ingredients do not react well to heat, and some of them will actually "cook" if you wash them with very hot water. Use a cool rinse to cleanse your hair.

  5. Step 5

Resist the urge to blow dry and style. While it may be very tempting to see immediately what kind of change the herbal oil conditioner has worked on your hair, you will get better results if you do not immediately dry out your hair with artificial heat. Let it air dry, then go back to your normal styling routine.
