How to Keep Your Dog Off Your Furniture

Yeah, sure, training is the best route to keep your dog off your expensive upholstered furniture. But even a trained dog may not be able to resist the urge to curl up on your comfortable sofa, particularly when you are not around. Here are some tips to deal with the situation created by the misbehaving, free spirited sofa dogs.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Aluminum Foil
Step1
For those of us with little to no success at training Rover to stay off the furniture, before you leave a room containing furniture you want to keep Rover-free, lift the seat cushion up, standing it on end. Left with no place to climb aboard, Rover will move on, looking for greener pastures to lie down.
Step2
Another option is to buy slipcovers, which are removable for washing. Some are fairly inexpensive considering how much we pay for the furniture the slipcovers are protecting. But alas, that’s not keeping Rover off; that’s giving in. (See www.surefit.com.)
Step3
Foiled Again! Aluminum foil works wonders. Lay one long strip or pieces of foil on the seat of the furniture. The foil doesn’t have to reach the full width. You can leave small areas of the furniture uncovered as long as those areas are smaller than the space your dog would need to lie down. In this picture, these pieces of foil were actually the last on a roll of foil. Too small to use for kitchen purposes, they became dog deterrents. Dogs will not touch the foil. It’s so simple to just lift off the foil when you want to sit. And the foil will last indefinitely.

on 7/28/2008 Cool ideal. I didn't know foil would keep them away. I can't wait to try this on my weiner dog! :)
