Fancy salt scrubs from a spa or body store can cost upwards of $15, but salt scrubs are one of the easiest beauty products you can make at home using the same ingredients as all those fancy store bought ones. This recipes is for the most basic salt scrub. You can use this as is or add your favorite ingredients and flavors to it. Many natural ingredients common to everyday life make wonderful additions to salt scrubs. Consider herbs and spices like cinnamon and ginger, as well as fruits like oranges and strawberries. You can also add sugar to your scrub for a more gentle exfoliation and sweeter smell.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • 1/2 cup of oil. (like olive, sweet almond or grapeseed)
  • 1 cup sea salt.
  • 5 drops of an essential oil (according to preference, like lavender or rosemary)
  • Small bowl
  • Fork
  • Large Spoon
  • Sealable plastic or glass jars (preferably with wide mouths)
Step1
In a bowl, combine the oil and salt and mix with a fork until the salt is fully saturated with oil. Set aside.
Step2
In about an hour you can check the mixture. The salt should be settled to the bottom of the bowl and a thin layer (about half an inch) of oil will be on top. If you need to add more oil, you can do that now. Mix again and set aside.
Step3
If the scrub has settled and there is enough oil, you can now add your essential oil. Mix gently with the fork, but not too much as essential oil disperses on its own.
Step4
Use your scrub. Apply to damp skin, exfoliate by rubbing in a gentle circular motion, and rinse with warm water.
Step5
Store your scrub. You’ll want to store your scrub in an airtight container. Old lotion jars with widemouthed lids are perfect or, if you plan on giving the scrubs away as gifts, you can purchase vintage glass bottles or widemouthed jars.

Tips & Warnings

  • Test the scrub on a small portion of your skin before using it all over to make sure that you don’t have a reaction. Make sure to tightly seal the jar after each use, so that your scrub doesn’t dry up.
  • Don't use a salt scrub if you have any cuts, have just shaved or have just been sun bathing.
  • If you have sensitive skin, be careful of using fragrances and essential oil. This scrub works just as well if you skip the essential oils.
