Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • 2 pieces of card stock – one light, one dark
  • Pencil
  • Scissor
  • Glue
  • Mat
  • Frame
  1. Step 1

The dark card stock forms the base of your tribal mask; this one is created in portrait format. Fold and cut the light card stock vertically and lay it over the dark card stock lengthwise, so that it covers half the dark sheet.

  2. Step 2

Draw an eye in the center of the light sheet; stylize it to express emotion and qualities like fear or joy. Cut the eye out carefully and place it in a symmetrical position on the dark sheet. The contrasting nature of your creation is beginning to take shape. Start just above the eyes and draw a nose; it should be about halfway to the bottom of the sheet in length. Design it to reflect the same character as the eyes, and repeat the cutting and placement process. Create and arrange the mouth using the same procedure.

  3. Step 3

The mask face is fashioned in the same manner as the facial features. There are no rules except your imagination. Make it round, square, rectangular or heart shaped. Remember African tribal masks are considered a form of spiritual expression; ensure the face’s design continues to reflect the nature of your facial features. Cut the face out and flip the remaining light paper to the dark side of the mask. Line it up with vertical center to complete the contrast. Complete your mask face by drawing, cutting and symmetrically arranging tattoo or scarification marks on the cheeks and forehead. Repeat the process to create stylized hair.

  4. Step 4

Ensure your mask design is placed like you want it and carefully glue your light cutouts to the dark background. Take care to maintain the symmetry as you glue; correct alignment is the key to a successful finished product. Set aside and allow the glue to dry thoroughly.

  5. Step 5

Customize your African mask. Your choice of materials is boundless. Use paint, sand, glue, glitter or bits of sponge or paper; the only rule is make sure to preserve a strong tonal contrast between the two sides of your tribal mask. Mat, frame and display your African tribal mask.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always cut from the light sheet of card stock; the dark sheet stays intact.
  • If your face is rounded, use angular shapes for the hair; this will give balance to your African tribal mask. If your face is angular, a more round hairstyle creates the desired effect.
  • Experiment with different colors and patterns of card stock to achieve more expressive and unique designs.
