Not everyone appreciates the “burn” of many commercial mouthwashes and rinses. Even more people are starting to question some of the common ingredients used in mouthwashes on the market today. The following recipe is an effective and pleasant-tasting alternative to commercially manufactured mouthwash that you can make as needed. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • 2 1/2 cups distilled or mineral water
  • 1 tsp. fresh mint leaves
  • 1 tsp. rosemary leaves
  • 1 tsp. fresh parsley
  • 1 tsp. ground or crushed anise seeds
  • Pot with a lid to boil water in
  • Tincture of myrrh (if making a larger quantity)
  • Strainer
  • Clean bottle with a cork or a cap
  • Funnel (if the neck of the bottle is small)

Instructions

      Bring the water in the pot to a rolling boil.

      Add the herbs and seeds. Cover the pot with the lid and turn off the heat.

      Let this mixture infuse for 20 minutes.

      Remove the covered pot from the stove after 20 minutes and allow the infusion to cool. When it reaches room temperature, strain the herbs and seeds from the water and pour the liquid into the bottle. Discard the herbs and seeds.

      Use as you would your regular gargle or mouthwash. If you wish to make up a larger quantity, double or triple the recipe, and then add 1 tsp. of tincture of myrrh as a natural preservative.
