Instructions

  1. Observe Your Spouse

    • 1

Listen to everything your spouse says. Those with Asperger's are often not the greatest communicators. It is up to you to ask the right questions to get the information that you want. If you ask general questions, you will get general answers. Be specific and it will help them to know what it is that you are asking.

    • 2

Watch. Body language is very important. Learn to read your spouse's body language so that you can pick up on cues to how they are feeling. Your spouse may not tell you when he is upset but, if you pay attention to their body language, you can usually tell and respond appropriately.

    • 3

Speak their language. Sometimes those with Asperger's have particular or quirky expressions. Learn to relate to them by using expressions that they use in their language to you.

    • 4

Be as patient as you can. If your spouse is having a hard time expressing himself, patience on your part will go a long way.

    • 5

Get help. Talking to others who have spouses with Asperger's can help you to cope. Use on-line resources to find a group near you.

Why is all the burden put on the partner? It's the person with Asperger's who needs to stop being mean, selfish, violent, etc. People with other mental illnesses/disorders aren't excused when they misbehave.
