How to Prevent Falling Overboard In Extreme Jet Skiing

If your love of water sports has caused you to take jet skiing to the extreme, then you know how important it is to take proper safety precautions. There are no limits to the fun you can have with the speed and handling capabilities of the jet ski when you are on the water. However, falling off a jet ski at 50 or 60 miles per hour can prove to be just as harmful as getting into a car accident at the same speed. While the water might seem friendly, hitting the surface at such a speed would be like hitting cement. Follow the steps below to prevent falling overboard in extreme jet skiing.

Instructions

  1. Prevent Falling Overboard In Extreme Jet Skiing

    • 1

Lean into the turns. Position your body on the jet ski so that you can comfortably shift your weight without losing your balance. You are likely to become unstable if you attempt to sit rigid and upright on the jet ski through extreme turns. Instead, move with the jet ski so that you strategically position the majority of your weight to help keep the jet ski stable. Don’t be afraid to lean, especially when making sharp, abrupt or continuous turns. You’ll be surprised how much more comfortable your ride will be, and you don’t fall overboard when you are balanced.

    • 2

Prepare for large waves. This is the most important part of a successful landing when jumping a huge wave on a jet ski. Your upper body is the most important component of staying balanced through a jump, particularly your grip. Make sure you are holding on to the jet ski firmly, with your torso as centered as possible as you approach the wave. Going into the jump centered will help you land it in the same way. Allow your body to respond naturally to the motion of the jet ski as it contacts the wave. Even if the entire jet ski is airborne, and your hands are the only part of your body touching the jet ski, you can still land the jump without falling overboard.

    • 3

Tighten your core torso muscles when executing a dead-stop reverse-turn. This is when you will need every muscle in your body perfectly placed in perfect form. When you stop the jet ski in this manner to splash water directly overhead, the jet ski will stop before you do. Things in motion stay in motion. This is one of the most challenging extreme jet skiing techniques to master, because you will inevitably lose your balance. Prevent falling overboard by practicing repeatedly. Regaining your balance as quickly as possible is the key to staying on the jet ski.

    • 4

Pay attention and look ahead. A shadow of an instant can determine whether you will be able to prevent falling overboard. Time to prepare for conditions beyond your control is everything in extreme jet skiing.
