How to Be A College Cheerleader

Cheerleading is an exciting activity to be involved in as well as a great way to stay in shape. Cheerleading in college is often on a very different level than high school cheerleading and here are some tips to increase your chances of being a cheerleader in college.

  1. Step 1

    Do your research! When you’re looking into schools and doing college
    Searches, it’s important to know what the requirements are for the squad. For example, some schools don’t allow cheerleaders to be full time on the squad their first semester or year of school, because of other academic requirements. Also, most collegiate squads have specific requirements about gymnastics and stunting abilities, and if you’re interested in this particular squad, it would be good to get some extra practice in before tryouts. Even if it’s your last semester of high school, a little bit of extra stunting or gymnastic practice could be very beneficial.

  2. Step 2

    Make sure that you have enough time in your schedule for cheering. College life is very different than high school and you will quickly find that you may not have as much time as you thought that you would. If you’re a part of the team, you will probably spend several hours a week practicing, lifting weights and working out, and of course quite a lot of time on the weekends or during the weeks for games.

  3. Step 3

    Try to prepare ahead of time for cheering in college. If you have the opportunity, try out for different things such as All American Cheerleading, or UCA Cheerleading squads. These are both great opportunities because you often get to have amazing experiences traveling around the world and meeting other cheerleaders, but it also looks really good when you’re trying out for college squads.
