1
Realize why the conversation is so awkward. If it's obvious to you, mention it. Bring up the fact that it is a horrible conversation. While you do risk offending your conversation partner, it is probably that they understand and appreciate the honesty. It breaks the ice!
-
2
Make a joke. Lighten up the moment by making fun of it. A bit of light sarcasm can even do the trick, "Well, that was awkward," can be funny if you use the right expression for the moment.

3
Follow up your joke with a compliment to the conversation partner. Make sure that it is true and sincere. This will immediately send the conversation back towards something positive about your partner.
-
4
Ask your conversation partner a question about the object of your compliment. Perhaps you said that you just noticed a really cool piece of jewelry that she is wearing. Ask her where she got it. If she indicates a cheap or discount store, indicate that you shop there all the time. Even if you don't, this can get the conversation into an equally awkward place if she thinks you are looking down at her for her discount store choices.
-
5
Practice active listening. Truly pause and take in what she is telling you. This will make the conversation go towards a really positive place. instead of awkward silence, the two of you can be exchanging meaningful glances between sentences.
