How to Make a Sofa Slip Cover

It is important to protect the fabric and structure of your couch with a slipcover. It will help prolong the life of your sofa, as well as give it a sense of sophistication. Choose an eye-catching pattern that matches the rest of your décor. Follow these steps to make your own.

• Measuring tape
• Fabric
• Fabric pins
• Scissors
• Sewing machine or needle and thread

Instructions

1. Use the tape measure to record the exact measurements of the sofa, covering each angle and corner. Record the height, length and curve measurements of the sofa to ensure the best fit possible for your slipcover.

2. Pick the type of fabric you want for the sofa's slipcover, as there are many different designs, styles and colors. Purchase fabric based on your measurements, but get around double the amount of slipcover fabric, in case you make a mistake.

3. Lay the slipcover fabric over the sofa, directly in the center, so fabric evenly drapes over each side of the sofa. Use the fabric pins to secure it around the angles where you measured. It is easier to do this in steps, such as working on the sides, the front and the back, etc. Allow for a 1-inch hem on the sofa. It is OK if the fabric is laying a little more loosely at this point.

4. Remove the slipcover fabric off the sofa after you have checked all the measurements again. Use your sewing machine to sew the hems in the location of the fabric pins, removing the pins as you sew. Place the slipcover over the sofa a couple of times while you are sewing it to make sure you have the right angles and measurements (so it ends up fitting).

5. Fit the slipcover over the sofa, cutting away stray edges of fabric and threads. Tuck under any stray edges and secure them into place with the needle and thread.
