How to Call in Sick

Step1
Before you even call in you need to decide what illness you will use as an excuse. Saying you have a cold is a common excuse, however if you go back to work the next day your boss may be able to tell. The key here is to use an illness that is temporarily debilitating, say for instance a 24 hour sort of bug. In this instance using an excuse such as diarrhea or food poisoning works best.
Step2
If your work is lenient enough to let you call in and leave a message that's an excellent choice, but do so early enough before your boss gets there so you do not have to deal with talking to him. If he is usually there by 7:00, call in and leave a message around 6:00 to be on the safe side.
Step3
Before you call in rehearse what you will say so that you are not bumbling on your words. Decide what you will say beforehand. Saying something like "I have been up most of the night with a pain in my stomach and won't be in."
Step4
When you call in don't try using a faker cough or sneeze, these are dead giveaways if they are fake or not. Just use a voice that sounds tired and fatigued and that should suffice.
Step5
If your work prefers email, then use that instead of a phone call. A short email will do the trick as well. Writing a long drawn out email only shows that you are lying. Besides someone who is really sick will not take the time to type out a long email.

Tips & Warnings

  • Try to catch on and use what is going around. If the stomach flu is going around, you may be able to use that for a few days in a row.
  • Don't call in sick too much or you may get fired.
