1
Visit City Island. This tiny island, considered part of the Bronx, is often forgotten by New Yorkers. This idyllic slice of the city and its small population make it hard to believe that you're in the Bronx -- you could easily believe you're on Prince Edward Island in Canada instead! Be sure to check out the island's many seafood restaurants -- they're what City Island is known for.

Go to Forest Hills. Forest Hills is a beautiful, peaceful and clean neighborhood in central Queens. Easily accessible, it's a quick 30-minute subway ride (take the E express train) from the center of Manhattan. Austin Street is known for its many amazing boutiques and restaurants. The shopping on this street is comparable to the shopping in Manhattan, and the restaurants are top-notch. This is definitely an area to check out if you'd like great dining and shopping without all the noise of Manhattan.

Stop by Sunnyside. Only a couple of stops from Manhattan, this quiet Queens neighborhood is home to a sizable expatriate Irish population. As a result, the area is full of many wonderful Irish pubs, specialty supermarkets, and restaurants. This is a great place to go if you want to get a taste of Ireland in New York City.

Spend some time in Brooklyn Heights. Brooklyn Heights is home to some exquisite brownstone buildings, and offers the best view of the Manhattan skyline in the entire city. This quiet neighborhood is sometimes referred to as America's oldest suburb, and the ambiance cannot be beat. Also home to a lot of great restaurants and shopping, Brooklyn Heights is a must-see. Be sure to take a walk on the Promenade and check out that amazing skyline view.

Visit Astoria. Astoria is home to large Greek and Middle Eastern populations. The result is an amazing fusion of Greek restaurants and Middle Eastern cafes, bakeries and stores. It's like a ton of different worlds and cultures melded into one. Walking down the streets of Astoria, you are bound to hear five conversations in five different languages simultaneously -- a true New York City experience!
