There’s an old notion that a couple of feet is enough space for a Guinea Pig. Well there’s another useless idea that can bite the dust. Space is an obvious consideration when building a cage for any type of pet. A Guinea Pig, specifically, will benefit by having at least 10 feet to move around in its cage. Learn how to make a guinea pig cage.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Rectangular Plastic Tub (10 feet)
  • Wire mesh
  • Thermos bottle top (5 inches in diameter)
  • Tools

Build a superb Guinea Pig cage

  1. Step 1

Draw out your cage design before you lay out the foundations to build on. Keep the design big (10 foot area). Consider the elements you will build into the cage.

  2. Step 2

Layout a large plastic tub. If you can get one that is a 10 foot rectangle, then so much the better. If not, then you can try cutting plywood for the same design.

  3. Step 3

Measure with a ruler the length and width of the enclosure you are going to mount. Use a compass to draw a circle in the side of the plastic tub. Cut the hole out with a utility knife.

  4. Step 4

Cut the top off of a large plastic thermos bottle. The bottle must be at least 5 inches in diameter (or large enough that your Guinea Pig won’t get stuck in it). Insert the bottle neck so that the cap is facing away from the cage. Hot glue the cap in place. This will act as a little escape door for your guinea pigs. It works as a great privacy door for shy Guinea Pigs, too.

  5. Step 5

Your best bet is to purchase a wire frame with wire mesh that can stand on its own. Measure the length, width, and height of your wire mesh. Cut the mesh so that you have four walls and a ceiling.

  6. Step 6

Ensuring that the mesh fits, you can now weld the parts together. If you don’t have a welder, then you can fold strong wire around the corners to hold the cage together.

  7. Step 7

Set your mesh on top of the plastic tub. Ensure that fits snugly into the inside of the plastic tub.
