Teach a Baby to Sign "Mommy" in American Sign Language

New parents eagerly await the moment when they are able to communicate with their new baby. Believe it or not, that moment can come sooner rather than later. Teach your baby sign language, and you will be communicating in no time at all. This article will instruct you how to teach your baby to sign "Mommy" in American Sign Language.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A Baby
  • A Surface for the baby so your hands are free
  1. Step 1

Lie your baby down so that he or she is supported enough to face you without needing your help. A swing or car seat works best.

  2. Step 2

Open your right hand with fingers extended.

  3. Step 3

Position your hand perpendicular to your face.

  4. Step 4

Repeatedly tap your chin and say, "Mommy" once.

  5. Step 5

Drop your hand into your lap to take a break between repetitions.

  6. Step 6

Repeat steps four (4) and five (5) until you or the baby loses interest.

  7. Step 7

Do this exercise several times per day, until your baby does it back to you or initiates the sign by him or herself.

Tips & Warnings
  • The best time to do this exercise is before feeding your baby.
  • Position your baby about a foot away from your face.
  • Do not teach more than one sign at once. When the baby has mastered one sign, move on to teaching the next sign.
