Summer is here, and those hot days are also arriving. The use of air conditioning is inevitable for most people. With the gasoline price on the rise, we must try to find more ways to save money.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Weather strip
  • Your best effort
  • Adjust your water heater
Step1
Turn your computer off by actually shut it down properly. If you put it on sleep, it is not off, and it contributes to 75% of energy uses.
Step2
Unplug your television sets, and any other electronic appliances in your house that you are not using.

Keeping them plugged in use a small amount of electronic even when they are not used.
Step3
Take shorter shower. It is advised that if you are not actively scrubbing, rising, or sudsing, then turn the water off. You will save several gallons of water.
Step4
Dry your clothes, and beach towels outside. Set up a cloth line in your back yard, and hang them in the sun. They will smell so good, you save money, and best of all, you also save the earth.
Step5
Weather strip all your doors and window. Your air conditioning is running, and you want to keep that cool temperature inside.

If you weather guard your home in the winter, you should also do it for summer.
Step6
Lower the setting for temperature on your water heater. The recommended setting from the US Department of Energy is 120 degree, and estimates a saving of 3 to 5 percent in energy cost.

Tips & Warnings

  • For every 10 degree lower on the water heater, you save 3-5 percent on cost
  • Weather strip is cheap, about less than $2 per roll
  • Check the energy rating stars on your refrigerator, if they are inefficient, replace them
