Knowing how to do temperature conversions is very helpful when you are reading a recipe, for example, a book from the US, a country that doesn't use the metric system. Baking and candy making use very precise measurements, and a couple of degrees off can mean an item being baked under cooked or overbaked, or a candy that is caramelized or too soft.

Instructions

Difficulty: Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • Thermometer, in Fahrenheit
  • Pen or pencil
  • Paper
  • Calculator, if needed
Step1
Take the Fahrenheit temp and subtract 32.
Step2
Take that answer and times 5.
Step3
Take that number and divide by 9, and that is the temperature in Celsius.
Step4
An example: 212 degrees F - 32 = 180. 180 x 5 = 900. 900 / 9 = 100. So, 212 degrees F equals 100 degrees C.

Tips & Warnings

  • This is simple algebra, so if you take the steps one at a time you'll have the right answer each time.
  • Don't worry if you don't have an even number at the end. Round up or down to the nearest degree.
