How to Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit (Temperature Conversion)

How to Convert Celsius to Fahrenheit (Temperature Conversion) thumbnail
Thermometers specify temperatures using both major scales.

Celsius and Fahrenheit are both linear temperature scales. In Celsius, 0 represents water's freezing point, and 100 represents its boiling point. A Celsius degree is a hundredth of this temperature difference. In Fahrenheit, these values appear at 32 and 212 degrees. The temperature difference that a hundred Celsius degrees covers therefore equals the temperature difference of 180 Fahrenheit degrees. Use this equivalency and the scales' common values to convert any temperature from Celsius to Fahrenheit.

Instructions

    • 1

Multiply the temperature in Celsius by 180. For instance, if you are converting 36 degrees Celsius: 36 --- 180 = 6,480.

    • 2

      Divide the result by 100: 6,480 ÷ 100 = 64.8.

    • 3

Add 32 to this answer: 64.8 + 32 = 96.8 degrees. This is the temperature in Fahrenheit.
