I have worked in a hardware store since 1974. If I have seen one, I have seen them all for sure ... ... ...

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Tape measure, pen or pencil and paper.
  1. Step 1

Identify what it is you indeed are working on and need to repair and/or replace. If need be, ensure you are where you need to be while researching alone so no distractions get in your way. This is not meant as an offense to your loved ones or friends; more it is insurance for you you will be more focused on your task at hand.

  2. Step 2

With writing utensil and paper in hand, go to where your problem is in your home or possibly office. Map out what it is you are needing to replace. THIS INCLUDES NOTING WHAT SIZE EVERYTHING IS. Galvanized pipe, for example, comes in 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4 and on as does black pipe and any plastic and/or pvc - cpvc. Draw pictures if you need to of what you have there in front of you and what you want in place of or instead.

  3. Step 3

Write down what you need by part name if possible. Examples include elbows, couplings, reducers, pipe tape, pvc glue and pvc cement. Take your diagrams and notes to where you will be shopping for such and not be surprised at how happy and friendly your salesman takes care of what it is you need seeing you have indeed mapped 'er out!

Tips & Warnings
  • Go over your diagrams and notes again while standing or sitting in front of your 'plumbing adventure'. Twice if you have to. Thrice if need be. Being sure ahead of time, again, saves time and more than likely money!
  • The object is to do as Larry The Cable Guy says at every concert he has: 'Get 'er done!!!', not how much it is going to cost you. By taking on this problem of possibly epic proportions in your mind, not only will you be saving yourself money by not hiring it out, you more than likely will learn something [maybe even a few 'tricks of the trade'] while you are doing it! Now, pilgrim, go get 'er done!!! :-)
