For whatever reason, you have pine sap in your hair. Maybe you got glopped on by a pine tree, maybe you had a run-in with the Christmas tree while straightening it on the stand, but now you have pine sap in your hair and it's sticky and matted...so very sticky. Follow this easy advice and you'll have clean, "slick" hair in no time!

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Olive oil
  • Shallow cup
  • Fine tooth comb
  • Paper towel
  • Towel to protect clothing

Step1
Pour olive oil into shallow cup or bowl. Start with a little, you can always add more as needed later.
Step2
Drape a towel over the shoulders of the person with pine sap in their hair. This will protect their clothing from the oil.
Step3
Dip fingers into the olive oil and "smear" the matted sappy hair liberally with oil. Work through the hair, loosening the sappy clump. The pine sap will begin to break down and dissolve. The hair will begin to pull apart into individual strands and smaller snarls.
Step4
Sop up the extra oil and catch the chunks of broken up pine sap with a paper towel. Run the paper towel along the length of hair to do this.
Step5
Reapply more olive oil to the hair and follow through with the fine toothed comb. Beginning at the root of the hair, run the comb through the hair to the end. Repeat until the comb can move freely along the length of the hair--this means the hair is free of pine sap. This is the cleanest, most natural way to get your hair clean.
Step6
Take and shower and shampoo your hair! You may want to repeat the shampoo step several times, as the hair may be very oily. The upside is that the hair will be very soft and manageable!

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't wash your hair before doing this! This will only spread the pine sap more and make cleanup more difficult.
  • You may want to wait until the pine sap has dried, as it makes it easier to isolate and treat. When pine sap is wet, it can spread very easily and you may do a cleanup, only to discover you didn't get it all the first time! It's best to wait until it's dry, then deal with it.
  • Don't get the olive oil in your eyes. It probably doesn't feel very good!

on 6/14/2008 Glad you liked it! I had to learn this lesson the hard way, involving a falling Christmas (already decorated) tree, two tree stands and a lot of time spent on the floor trying to save the tree. My hair glopped into the tree water and I dried it with a towel, not giving it a thought--when it dried an hour later, my hair was a giant clump of nasty pine sap! My husband helped me comb it out, but it took over an hour--it must've looked like classic primate behavior, him grooming the "nits" out of me!

on 6/13/2008 I liked your writing voice and sense of humor. We have a lot of pine trees here and I will save this for when I have a "run in" with them. Thanks for the advice!
