How to Keep Your Mind Sharp Even with an Aging Body

Mental decline is an inevitable fact of life, and studies show that it starts as early as in our thirties! Other research shows that it can be slowed, and new brain cells even created if you continue to learn new things lifetime. Here are some ways to keep your mind and memory sharp as you age.

  • PC or gaming platform, such as Wii
  • Puzzle books, such as Sudoku
  • Books or courses on tape
  • Walking shoes

    Eat Well to Stay Mentally Sharp

  1. Step 1

    Every morning, drink a cup of black coffee on an empty stomach to sharpen your senses. Take your vitamin supplements and 2 oz. of colloidal minerals, which may enhance neurotransmitter function.

  2. Step 2

    Eat small meals 6 times a day with balanced proteins, fats and carbs. Save heavier carbs for the evening to ensure you get a good nights sleep.

  3. Step 3

    Avoid white sugars and flours and heavy meals at any one sitting. This will keep you from feeling mentally sluggish.

  4. Step 4

    Snack on fresh fruits and vegetables during the day and sip green tea which is an excellent antioxidant.

  5. Exercising Your Brain

  6. Step 1

    Walk briskly every morning. Try to remember everything you see as you walk and write it down later. You will soon notice that you are writing down more things as you sharpen your powers of observation.

  7. Step 2

    Play a fast action PC or Wii game every day to keep your brain moving quickly and your reflexes sharp. The Wii forces your mind and body to work together. You can also play a simple PC game like Minesweeper, which challenges your memory and reasoning skills.

  8. Step 3

    Ask a friend to play memory games with you. Look around the room for one minute, then ask your friend to blindfold you. Score one point for every object in the room that you can remember.

  9. Step 4

    Enroll in a course that will teach your a subject that is unfamiliar to you. Every day, study one section of a course, an instructional guide or a book on tape. The Learning Company offers various college courses on tape.

  10. Step 5

    Learn a new language. Nothing fires up your brain cells like learning to think in a different tongue. You can enroll in a course, or study at home with tapes or PC programs, such as Rosetta Stone.

Tips & Warnings
  • Eggs are a good source of choline which your brain needs. If you don't have cholesterol problems, consider eating eggs in the morning.
  • Avoid smoking, binge drinking, or skipping meals
