Lack of drainage can become a big problem for homeowners once the ground has settled around the home or new homes are built in the surrounding area. Some areas in the backyard may become flooded during heavy rains. Planting in these wet areas may not solve the problem. Adding drainage to a backyard is not a complicated project to do. It does require some time but will alleviate the problems of excess water.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Shovel
  • 1" Clean gravel
  • 4" Perforated drain pipe

    Adding Draining to a Backyard

  1. Step 1

Locate the highest point of the backyard and the lowest point of the backyard. The drainage system will extend through this area.

  2. Step 2

With a shovel, dig a trench along this path. The trench should be approximately 24" deep and 6" wide. When completed, compact the soil at the bottom of the trench.

  3. Step 3

Line the bottom of the trench with 2" of gravel. This must be done along the entire length of the trench.

  4. Step 4

Lay the 4" perforated drainage pipe along the entire length of the trench. The holes in the drainage pipe must be pointing down towards the gravel in order to collect water.

  5. Step 5

Fill the trench with gravel on top of the installed drainage pipe. The trench should be completely filled leaving 1" on top for sod. When completed, add sod on top of the gravel.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure the holes in the drainage pipe are not touching any dirt.
  • Start the trench at least 4' to 6' away from the home.
  • Drainage pipe cloth can be purchased at any home improvement store. It is wrapped around the drainage pipe to prevent dirt from clogging the drainage holes.
  • If necessary, use a level to make sure the drainage pipe is slightly tilted down.
