Knives are one of the most dangerous items in your kitchen. This is especially true if you don't know how to properly store them. Before you know it, you've stuck your hand in a drawer and are on the way to the emergency room. Even if you're careful about how you reach into a drawer, improper storage can damage the blades of your knives. Take a bit of time to learn about proper storage.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Keep them in a handy spot. A kitchen should be efficient and everything should be within reach. This means that you should store your knives near the area where you do the most cutting. It could be a drawer or even a storage area built into your kitchen island. Either way, it's important to keep them handy.

  2. Step 2

Keep your family safe. If you have children in your house, it's important to choose a storage area that they aren't able to access. The easiest thing you can do is install a childproof lock on your knife drawer. That way you have easy access and your children are protected.

  3. Step 3

Reserve a drawer for your knives. If you choose to store your kitchen knives in a drawer, make sure that's all you store in that drawer. This ensures that your blades are protected and that you can see what's in the drawer. When you can't see in the drawer, because there is too much clutter, you risk the chance of cutting yourself.

  4. Step 4

Hang a magnetic storage bar. Another great way to store kitchen knives is to use a magnetic storage bar. This allows you easy access no matter where you do your cutting. Simply attach the magnetic bar to the wall and attach your knives.

  5. Step 5

Buy a storage block. A storage block gives you a place to store the knives you use most. Not all storage blocks are the same though. If you want to protect your blades, choose a storage block made with wooden skewers. This type of storage block allows you to slide your knives into the block, without dulling the blade.

  6. Step 6

    Protect your purchase.

Tips & Warnings
  • Buying knives with covers make them easier to store and protect the blades.
  • You can purchase safes that fit over the knife blade to protect your children.
  • When using a magnetic storage bar, twist the knife off the bar pulling the edge of the blade off first. This ensures that the blade doesn't get damaged.
  • If you have children, you should never use a magnetic storage bar.
