How to Treat Prevacid Side Effects

Prevacid is a prescription drug used to treat acid reflux, heartburn and ulcers as well as other stomach conditions. Unlike similar drugs, which have been offered over the counter, Prevacid is still only available through a prescription. Prior to receiving the medication you must first consult your doctor who will determine if the pills are effective for you. Once you begin the pills you might experience some side effects and if you experience those side effects, you’ll want to know how to treat them.

Instructions

    • 1

Call your doctor when you first begin experiencing any side effects from taking Prevacid. You might be experiencing an allergic reaction or having an interaction with other medications you’re currently taking. Follow the advice of your doctor.

    • 2

Take over the counter pain relievers if you experience headaches or pains in your joints. Headaches are one of the most common side effects experienced by those taking Prevacid. You can also try rubbing your temples to reduce some of the pressure you feel.

    • 3

Spend a day or two resting in bed and take a few days off work. Those who have taken Prevacid have sometimes experienced constipation or diarrhea as well as nausea. That can make it difficult to do your daily activities.

    • 4

Drink plenty of fluids and stick to a liquid diet if you experience any of the stomach problems that occur as a side effect of the medication. This helps reduce the acid in your stomach, which can cause your stomach to feel more upset than it did before.

    • 5

Use a sports drink to increase the electrolytes in your body and to maintain the fluids in your body, especially if you experience any nausea, constipation or diarrhea. Your body needs to replenish itself and nothing works better than a good old fashioned sports drink.

Tips & Warnings

  • Make sure you tell your doctor about anything unusual you experience while taking the medication. Your doctor might change your dosage or move you to a different medication.

  • Don’t ignore any side effects or unusual experiences you have while taking Prevacid. This could be a sign of a more serious problem.
