How to Deal with the Airlines' Anti-Liquid Rules

If you haven't traveled recently, you might not be aware of the recent rule regarding liquids in your carry-on luggage. You are now required to place liquid items in a 1-qt. plastic bag. While this requirement might hinder your in-flight personal hygiene, rest assured that the TSA agents take it very seriously. Here's what you need to know.

Things You'll Need

  • A 1-qt., zip-top, clear plastic bag
  • Containers of toiletries, cosmetics and other liquids or gels that weigh three oz. or less.

Instructions

  1. How to Deal with the Airlines' Anti-Liquid Rules

    • 1

Purchase some 1-qt. zip-top clear plastic bags. However, keep in mind that you will only be able to bring one bag on the plane.

    • 2

Purchase 3-oz. bottles of your favorite toiletries or cosmetics. Place them in the zip-lock bag.

    • 3

Prior to going through security, remove the plastic bag. This is extremely important. In some airports, if you fumble and search for your bag, the security officers will make you go to the end of the line.

    • 4

Place the bag on the conveyor belt.

    • 5

Don't forget to retrieve your bag after it goes through screening.

Tips & Warnings

  • On overnight flights, some airlines will supply a small tube of toothpaste.

  • For women, consider using mineral makeup.

  • Consider using tooth powder, as opposed to toothpaste.

  • Exceptions to the rule include bay formula, breast milk and baby juice

  • Other exceptions include liquid or gel prescription medications, personal lubricant, saline solution and eyedrops for medical purposes.

  • You can not use 3-oz. generic travel bottles. They must be commercial bottles filled with the original product.
