How to Prevent Common BMX Injuries

  1. Step 1

Wear your helmet. This is the most important tip for BMX riders to follow. Head injuries are common, and represent the most fatal type of damage riders can suffer. Wearing a helmet is the only way to prevent these traumatic injuries.

  2. Step 2

Wear other protective equipment. Besides helmets, protective gear is provided for knees, wrists, elbows, eyes, feet and legs. By wearing the equipment, you will be more likely to prevent a BMX injury.

  3. Step 3

Wear the proper clothing. BMX riders have protective clothing that should be worn each time they attempt to ride. This clothing was designed specifically to prevent injuries that can occur if you fall off the bike.

  4. Step 4

Adjust your bike. One way to prevent injuries that is often overlooked is to adjust the bike. No two BMX riders are alike, which is why no two BMX bikes should be adjusted the same. The seat and handlebars must be at the appropriate height for the specific rider.

  5. Step 5

Keep a first-aid kit on hand. You can prevent a BMX injury from getting worse if you treat it immediately. Have a first-aid kit with you whenever you ride, so that you can treat acute injuries quickly.

  6. Step 6

Use a cell phone. Keeping a cell phone with you will help you to prevent a BMX injury from getting worse. Call for help as soon as you need it.

  7. Step 7

Ride with a friend. BMX riders should never attempt to ride alone.
