While speech disorders are common amongst children, these disorders also affect adults. People who suffer from a speech condition may have difficulty pronouncing words, and others may have a hard time deciphering their words. Fortunately, there are ways to treat speech disorders.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderate

Things You’ll Need:

  • Speech therapist
  • Anti-anxiety medication
Step1
Identify the speech disorder. There are numerous types of speech disorders. Some are less severe and easy to manage. Consult your doctor. If necessary, they’ll refer you to a speech pathologist.
Step2
Make an appointment with a speech therapist. Once the speech pathologist identifies the speech disorder, you may have to see a speech therapist. These doctors know how to treat a variety of speech disorders.
Step3
Learn how to speak slowly. Sometimes, minor speech problems result from talking too rapidly. Rather than blurt out all your thoughts in one breath and sound muddled, focus on one point at a time. When you speak too fast, others can’t comprehend your thoughts.
Step4
Practice oral-motor exercises. Proper breathing contributes to clear speech. Speech therapists often recommend oral-motor exercises during sessions. However, it’s important to practice these exercises 10 to 15 minutes each day. These exercises combine breathing and relaxation techniques.
Step5
Take anti-depressants to manage anxiety. Anxiety and nervousness can intensify speech disorders. A little anxiety is fine. However, if you suffer from chronic or severe anxiety, make a doctor’s appointment and ask for an anti-depressant or anti-anxiety prescription.
Step6
Maintain a positive attitude. A speech disorder can be a lifelong struggle. Overcoming the problem can be frustrating and difficult. Rather than give up and stop therapy, keep a positive mind set.
