How to Make a Crown Flower Lei

The Crown Flower Lei is has a royal appearance and is very popular amongst the people of Hawaii. The flower boasts a crown like center piece in the midst of velvety petals. Learn how to make a Crown Flower Lei in just a few easy steps.

Things You'll Need

  • 40 Crown Flowers
  • 6 Inch Lei Needle
  • 6 feet of white thread

Instructions

    • 1

      Place one end of the thread through the lei needle and pull it through until there are three feet of thread on each side. Hold the thread with the first finger and thumb three inches from the end and tie it into a knot.

      Select a flower and hold it by the bottom with the center "crowns" facing up. Place the Lei needle under the bottom of the flower. Push the point of the needle through the bottom of the flower and continue through the "crown".

      Gently pull the flower down to the end of the thread until it reaches the knot.

      Repeat steps 1 to 3 until there are three inches of thread left on the end.

      Tie the two ends of the lei together. The first and last flowers should connect together with no space in between.

Tips & Warnings

  • To accentuate the lei, add a bow made out of ribbon to the point of the lei where the ends are connected.

  • For a different look, remove the petals and make a lei out of the center crowns of the flower.
