The greyhound is a unique dog breed. Since the American Kennel Club does not consider them pets, in most cases, the only way to adopt a greyhound is through an adoption agency that specializes in these former racing dogs. As such, greyhound adoption is almost a cult. For this reason, there are two greyhound events that take place each year. One happens in Dewey Beach, Delaware, and the other takes place in Kanab, Utah. These events feature workshops, parties and other types of fun events. Hundreds, sometimes thousands of greyhounds and their human companions attend. Read on to learn how to go to a greyhound gathering.

Instructions

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Things You’ll Need:

  • A greyhound
  • Tickets to a greyhound gathering
  • Greyhound vaccinations
  • Lodging reservations
  • Dog food and treats
  • Dog food and water bowls
  • Transportation to the event
Step1
Choose which event you would like to attend. The Kanab event usually takes place during May, whereas the Dewey Beach takes place in October.
Step2
Register for your chosen event on the appropriate website.
Step3
Secure pet-friendly hotel reservations that are in close proximity to to the event. In most cases, the nearby hotels will allow dogs. However, it's best not to assume anything. Keep in mind that the earlier you secure reservations, the better. If you are not within walking distance of the event, it may be hard to find parking spaces.
Step4
Get your dog vaccinated.
Step5
Pack your car with dog food, treats and water bowls. Be sure to bring a dog bed. Make sure that your car is ready for long distance travel. Some events have a fenced off area where dogs can run freely. However, in order to participate, your dog must have a muzzle, so be sure to bring one along.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are taking a long drive to the greyhound gathering, stop frequently and allow your dog to walk.
  • The greyhound gatherings are great places to pick up dog coats, collars, leashes and other supplies at a good price.
  • If your greyhound is not friendly to people or other dogs, tie a red bandanna around his or her neck.
  • While other dog breeds are welcome, they will not be allowed in the running area. This is because the greyhounds might be tempted to gang up on him.
  • Don't even think of bringing your cat.
  • Register as early as possible. These events fill up quickly.
