Eat grains. When choosing foods with grains to add to your diet look for whole grains a good rule of thumb is to choose brown. Two examples are brown rice instead of white and whole wheat bread instead of white bread.

Make your plate colorful. Think dark green and orange to get a nutrient-rich amount of vegetables in your diet. Dark green leafy vegetables such as collards and spinach are good examples. Other good examples are green beans, peas and carrots.

Go fruity. Eat as much fruit as you can on a daily basis, fresh, dried or frozen it does not matter. Get creative with your fruit by putting them in a blender or making a delicious smoothie.

Go easy on the fats. Eliminate fats such as butter, shortening or lard. However, you still need to include a fat source. Get your fats from foods like fish, nuts and use vegetable oils for cooking. When cooking meats, make sure you cook meats with a low fat content.

Choose dairy products wisely. A calcium rich diet is important to your recovery, yet you want to be careful when purchasing dairy product. Make sure you purchase dairy that is low fat or even better fat free. The main ingredient you need from dairy is calcium.

Eat to reduce your risk of stroke. You do this by following the food pyramid; eat a variety of different foods daily. The rule of thumb is the more colorful your plate is the better.
