How to Install a Custom Cat Door
-
1
Decide on the door. Before purchasing any materials, decide which door will be used. Most people choose their back door or a patio door that's easy for cats to go in and out of.
-
2
Measure the length and width of your cat so you can create a doorway that's large enough for your cat to comfortably walk through. Keep in mind that cats will gain weight over their lifetime, so be prepared to create a doorway that's a little larger than your cat.

3
Purchase a custom cat door template to help you easily install a cat door. Attach the pet door template at the bottom of the door. Choose a height that's easy for your cat to use. Trace the inside of the template using a pencil.
-
4
Remove the template. Place an 'X' in each corner. You will use these marks when attaching the metal frames of the cat door. Using a jigsaw, cut along the pencil line to create an opening.
-
5
Install the outer frame first. If you want to create a seal that will prevent water leaks and other damage, use caulk on the outside.
-
6
Attach the inner frame pieces using the marks you made earlier as a guide. Insert the plastic door so the flap is on the inside. Attach any hardware. Make sure the door works correctly before allowing your cat to use it. If your cat is unsure about how to use the door, carefully show your pet by moving the flap until she gets the idea.
