Doing homework is not a favorite activity for some children but since they have to do it we must find ways to encourage them to do their homework. We don’t want to frustrate them but what can we do to encourage a child to do his homework? Here are some ideas.

Spend time with your child when he does his homework. As you watch him, compliment him on something that he does well. When you compliment a child in his homework he tries to do even better in that area and tries to achieve a better result in other areas. Your child desires your approval. He is listening to all that you say to him. Make it count.

Be interested in what your child is learning in his homework. Homework can be boring. If the child sees that his parent is interested in what he is learning the child may be sparked to look at his homework differently. He will remember what interested you and will tend to remember it later.

Show yourself as studious to your child. Although there are many tasks to be done; try to set a time where you are also learning something. When your child sees that you are reading, writing, researching and learning this may encourage him to do the same. Children become like what they are around.

Give the child a reward to look forward to. If the child knows that he will have a privilege only when he is done with his homework, he will be more apt to do his homework. It may be use of the computer, video games, or television time. Since these things are strongly desired by most children this will naturally encourage the child to do his homework. This should be done daily. If the child does not finish his homework by a certain time then there will be no reward.

Set goals for the child so that the child will be encouraged to do his homework. Goals should be short term and long term. Short term being weekly and long term being monthly. At the end of the term whether short or long the child will receive a special reward. You choose what that reward will be. It may be money, buying something he wanted or just going to a special place (within reason) of his choice.

Always lift your child up with your words do not bring him down with them.
Take him to the public or college library for a different setting to do his homework.
