How to Enjoy Singapore for Free

1. 

   Visit Haw Par Villa. This one of a kind attraction can only be found in Singapore. It was started in the 1920s by brothers Aw Boon Haw and Aw Boon Par, who built the famous Tiger Balm Empire. To show their appreciation to the Chinese community who used their products, the brothers built this unique park dedicated to Chinese culture and mythology. Haw Par Villa contains hundreds of statues and life-sized dioramas, as well as a museum of Jade artifacts that are part of the estate. Haw Par Villa is absolutely free. Just walk right in and have a self-guided tour.

2. 

   Go to the beach. Sentosa Island is a tourist destination with many museums and attractions. One of the little known aspects of Sentosa Island is that there are half a dozen beautiful, white sand beaches that anyone can use for free. There is a small $1.50 admission to get onto the island, which contributes to the cost of maintaining the facilities, but that is a modest amount to pay. Once you’re on Sentosa, take one of the free buses to the Underwater World Museum and Aquarium. Directly across from the museum is one of the most beautiful beaches you will ever see.

   As long as you’re on Sentosa for the beaches, make sure to visit the Musical Fountain when it gets dark. You’ll probably be done with the beach by the time the sun goes down anyway. The Musical Fountain is located just down hill from Sentosa’s Merlion. This unique fountain combines music, water, lights and lasers in a way that can only be described as magical, or perhaps holographic. It is truly an amazing display, and it’s absolutely free for anyone who takes the time to watch it.

4. 

   Go for a walk through China Town. China Town is very crowded. There are lots of street cafes and open markets in China Town, so there is a lot to see. Also feel free to explore any of the large buildings along the main street. They are all one form of shopping mall or another, some of which even have a street market feel on the inside. There are definitely some expensive items to see in China Town, but there are also some great deals to be found. Cheap souvenirs can be obtained from any number of street vendors, making this a good place to buy trinkets to take home to your friends.

5. 

   Visit the DHL hot air balloon.Technically it is a gas balloon, and it costs $7 to ride the balloon. However, if you go on a Friday or Saturday night, the tour company that operates the balloon usually has a band giving free concerts to help draw people in. This is a free show that costs you nothing to see, and if you decide to splurge on the balloon ride, you’ll be treated to one of the most amazing aerial views all the way into Malaysia.

• Singapore has a number of shrines and temples from every major religion. These are beautiful buildings, and as long as you are quiet and respectful of others, no one minds if you take a look around. In fact, they are usually quite honored that you have an interest in their culture.
